WORKSHOPS

HAVANA, CUBA

The last 10 years, Okantomí has arranged workshops with Afrocuban Dance, Music and
Song in Havana, Cuba, with teachers who are among the best
artists from Conjunto Folklórico
Nacional de Cuba, Tropicana, Instituto Superior
de Cuba (ISA) and others.
The workshop is aimed at musicians, dancers
and music and dance students and others with a serious interest
in Afrocuban folklore.
Workshop Winter 2008
The workshop starts 27. - 31. December 2008.
The
workshops can be prolonged.
There is 4 hours of classes each day from 10.00 - 12.00 am. &
12.30 - 2.30 pm.
20 hours in total.
Price:
Price: $300 for 1 week.
You pay in pesos convertibles (which has the same rate as US
dollars)
Location:
Cocosolo, Marianao, Havana.
The teachers:
Dance: Miriam Isquierdo, Domingo Pau both 1. dancers from
Conjunto Folklórico National de Cuba.
Percussion: Julio & Ignacio Guerra Acosta,
Angel Bolaños, Coco and others. Among the best folklore
musicians from Cabaret Tropicana, Dansa National, Conjunto
Folklorico National de Cuba.
The dance will be accompagnied by live musicians and singers.

Rumba
Contents:
At the workshop you will be taught in Afrocuban percussion and
dance, Yoruba, Congo, Arará, Rumba and connected songs.
The workshop is organised such a way that you can attend either the dance
or the music course, but you can also
participate in both courses, for example dance in the morning and
percussion in the afternoon. The classes will be divides in
levels if needed.
We give you contacts to religious ceremonies, rumbas, shows,
concerts taking place during the period.
Services:
You will get a nice café cubano and a simpel sandwich each day
in the break. You have to bring your own drinking water.
The workshops will end with a nice party for the
participants, teachers and others related to the project. This
is included in the course price. You will get food and a beer, so bring extra
Rom etc. if needed!
Equipment:
Women: bring a wide skirt. Also light shoes are recomended,
because the floor is hard..
Equipment recording video, music.
Location:
Sala de Video in Cocosolo, Marianao, an area 10 km. from the
center of Havana, an environment in which afrocuban culture, dance and music
is a part of daily life.
The travel:
You are responsible for your travel arrangements, tickets, lokal transportation etc. But we
are happy to provide contacts to locals that have rooms or houses
to rent.
It is a good idea to reserve your plane tickets as early as possible.
We do not take responsibility for your stay og lokal transportation,
but help you as best we can.

Previous courses and participants:
It is now 8 wonderful folklore workshops we have arranged in
Havana, all of them with a great atmosphere and a high level of
participants' engagement.
Actually, we have several participants that come back year
after year. In 2003/04 we had periods with app. 30 workshop
participants, which was a challenge as to space etc. You have to
realise that in Cuba things can be a bit unpredictable,
especially when it comes to suitable rooms and instruments. And
as no deposit or pre-payment is required on booking, we have to
accept enough bookings to make up for any 'no shows'.
The rush comes when everybody is engaged in singing, dance
and percussion, the atmosphere is steaming, inciting rhytms,
beautiful songs, sweaty dancers and teachers, who with humour
and seriousness strive to understand and stimulate the students
on their level.
